After intensive development and testing, TotalEnergies Glass Product Division has developed a product to successfully remove the need for the hot-end coating stage. Our newest break-through product, Glasskote Base 1, incorporates both primer and finisher as a one-step coating process which is environmentally friendly, easy to use and fulfills the stringent requirements of glass manufacturers. Glasskote Base 1 eliminates harmful chemicals and is another step forward in the decarbonization process of our customers.

This newly developed, water-based concentrate coats the outside surface of glass bottles. It acts as an adhesion promoter and primer for existing cold end coatings. This revolutionary formulation makes it entirely possible to completely substitute the tin or titanium-based hot end coatings. By combining Glasskote Base 1 with your existing cold end coating, you can achieve excellent gliding properties and label adhesion. Glasskote Base 1 is combined with the cold end emulsion and applied through the current cold end spray bridge. 

Water Quality

Using deionized water is highly recommended (i.e. reverse osmosis treated water) having total hardness (TH) below 4 ppm, total dissolved solids (TDS) below 100 ppm. Hard water and highly salty water can cause spotting on the glass surface, due to the calcium and the other salts which remains on the surface during and after water evaporation.

Preparation and Equipment

Glasskote Base 1 is usually applied with traverse sprays after the annealing lehr exit. We strongly recommend the use of automatic self-cleaning spray nozzles, made of stainless steel with PTFE internal construction. Other metals, such as brass, tend to corrode. This corrosion can clog the nozzles causing production problems.
